Dr rAILENE nAIDOO
From childhood, I watched my mum, who was a matron care for strangers as though it was her own family. This ignited the passion within me to help people. I was privileged enough to be accepted by Stellenbosch University Medical School. It was a challenge as I had a major culture shock but because of the love of medicine I persevered until the end.
I then did my internship at Victoria Hospital followed by my community service at Greenpoint Community Clinic and Vanguard Trauma Unit. I was still at a crossroads but once I joined Mowbray Maternity Hospital under the guidance of Professor Sue Fawcus, I fell in love with the discipline of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
Although it is a very emotive discipline, caring for mum and baby, I still thought that I could contribute a great deal. I got married to a very supportive man, who allowed me to follow my dream and specialize in Obs and Gynae while we raised our three kids.
That I did through the University of KZN as we had moved back to our hometown, Durban. Whilst working at the largest government hospitals in KZN, I also obtained Lecturing status at the University of KZN. This meant a lot to me as it was very important that I was able to not only give back to the community but also to my peers.
We decided as a family to relocate to Johannesburg, and I joined Chris Hani Bharagwanath Hospital. This was one of the greatest learning experiences in my life as I learnt immense skills and confidence with amazing support. I did however feel that due to family commitments, it was time for me to make the transition from government to private practice.
I was afforded the opportunity to join Netcare Garden City Hospital, and the rest as they say is…..yet to come.
I bring a fresh new perspective to Obs and Gynae. I insist on an interactive relationship with many options provided to the patient. I remain very much academic and keep abreast with the latest techniques and technologies. I aim to provide a comfortable and safe environment in my consulting rooms while ensuring that I only use state of the art equipment.
